When you want drum carding without a big footprint. The Louet Junior Drum Carder is a compact, studio-quality carder that produces a 4" wide batt—the same width many spinners love because it behaves like a roving-sized strip when you remove it from the drum. It’s an easy way to start blending, opening fiber, and preparing smooth batts for spinning or felting—without taking over your workspace.
A small carder that still gives you “real” results
- Compact, beginner-friendly format: The 4" drum width is ideal for learning drum carding and for smaller projects.
- Batts you can spin from right away: Remove the batt and spin from it directly—great for consistent drafting practice.
- Same Louet build quality: Solid construction and professional carding cloth for reliable, repeatable fiber prep.
- Ready out of the box: Ships fully assembled and includes clamps + tools to get started quickly.
Choose the cloth density (TPI) that matches your fiber
TPI (“teeth per inch”) determines how aggressively the cloth grabs the fiber. If you mostly work with one type of fiber, choose the TPI that makes prep feel easy—not fussy.
| TPI option |
Best for |
Why you’ll like it |
Common use cases |
| 46 TPI (coarse) |
Coarser wools, longwools, rustic blends, fibers with more debris |
More open spacing helps prevent clogging and keeps textured add-ins intact |
Art batts, longwool prep, rugged sweater blends, textured felting layers |
| 72 TPI (all-around) |
Most medium wools + general blending |
Best balance of separation + control for everyday fiber prep |
Color blending, smooth batts, everyday spinning prep, many felting projects |
| 120 TPI (extra-fine) |
Very fine or slippery fibers (fine merino, silk, cashmere, fine alpaca) |
Denser cloth “grips” delicate fibers so you get a smoother, more even prep |
Luxury blends, fine next-to-skin yarn, lightweight batts for refined spinning |
Not sure which Louet drum carder size is right?
All Louet carders are built for smooth blending and reliable results. The biggest difference is batt width (how much fiber you can process per pass).

FAQs
Is the Junior “too small” if I want to spin a lot?
Not necessarily. The Junior is excellent if you like a 4" batt width and prefer a compact setup. If you regularly process sweater quantities or want wider color gradients, the Louet Standard or XL may feel faster.
Do I need 120 TPI?
Choose 120 TPI if you mainly work with finer, more slippery fibers (fine merino, silk, cashmere, fine alpaca). If you work with general wool roving and blends, 72 TPI is the most versatile choice.
What fiber should I start with?
