Soft merino. Silk shimmer. Tonal color that looks alive when you spin it. Constellation Range is a premium, dyed combed top made for spinners and felters who want a smooth drafting experience and a finished yarn (or felt) with depth and glow—not flat color.

Each 8 oz bundle is a tonal blend of 70% dyed Merino wool and 30% Tussah silk with a fine, next-to-skin micron range (20–23 microns, avg. ~21). The result is fiber that drafts cleanly, spins into beautifully defined yarn, and brings a subtle sheen to every stitch.

Why this blend is a favorite for “fancy-but-usable” yarn

  • Easy drafting, even for newer spinners: Combed top means the fibers are aligned, so your hands can find a steady rhythm faster.
  • Tonal depth (not harsh striping): These colorways are designed to create movement and dimension as you spin.
  • Silk adds strength + shine: The Tussah silk brings a natural luster and helps support yarn that’s meant to be worn.
  • Clean, ready-to-use prep: Delivered combed and cleaned—prepped, dyed, and ready to work with, with no harsh animal smell and minimal vegetable matter.

What you’re working with (and why it matters)

  • 70% Merino wool (20–23 microns): Soft, springy, and easy to draft—great for yarn you’ll actually want against the skin.
  • 30% fine Tussah silk: Adds sheen and drape, and gives your finished fabric a subtle “light-catching” look.
  • Staple length: 3–4 inches — a comfortable drafting length for many spinners.
  • Top width: ~1 inch — easy to split into smaller strips for finer yarn or spin as-is for thicker singles.

Best uses (spinning + felting + beyond)

  • Hand spinning: Smooth to draft on a wheel or drop spindle. Spin it worsted-style for crisp definition, or spin from the fold for a softer, airier yarn.
  • Needle felting: Merino felts readily, making it great for detailed work. The silk contributes visual texture as you build up layers.
  • Wet felting: Merino bonds quickly; silk tends to migrate toward the surface during fulling, creating a beautiful sheen and surface interest.
  • Weaving + mixed media: Spin it into weft/warp yarn, use it for thrums, accents, or textured details in fiber art.

How much fiber is in an 8 oz bump?

This fiber is sold by weight. As a reference, an 8 oz bump is approximately ~30 ft of continuous top (length will vary slightly by colorway and compression).

FAQs

Is this roving or combed top?

This fiber is delivered as a combed, aligned top (often called roving). The parallel alignment makes drafting smoother and is especially helpful if you like more defined yarn.

Is it beginner-friendly?

Yes. The Merino base drafts smoothly, and the staple length is comfortable to learn on. If you’re brand new, start by pre-drafting a small section and use park-and-draft on a spindle or a slower wheel speed.

Will the silk make it harder to spin?

Silk is smoother than wool, so it can feel a little “slippery” at first. The Merino keeps the blend friendly. Draft smaller amounts and add twist a bit sooner if you notice it drifting apart.

Can I needle felt or wet felt this blend?

Yes. Merino felts readily, making it great for both needle and wet felting. In wet felting, the silk often shows up as surface shine and texture rather than fully felting down.

How much should I buy for a project?

It depends on what you’re making and the yarn weight you plan to spin. For larger projects, we recommend buying enough in one order so your colors stay as consistent as possible.
