Springy fiber that helps projects keep their shape

Cheviot is known for its distinctive helical crimp, which gives it a bouncy, resilient feel. That natural “memory” helps yarns and felted pieces stay structured over time—especially for items that get real wear.

What you’ll notice while you work

  • Cheviot breed fiber with helical crimp for bounce, loft, and shape retention
  • Natural undyed light cream/off-white color that works beautifully as-is or as a dye base
  • Medium wool (26–33 microns) that leans durable and hardwearing for practical makes
  • Staple length of 4–5 inches for steady, controllable drafting on a wheel or spindle
  • Feltable for both needle felting and wet felting when you want a firm, lasting finish
  • Cruelty-free and environmentally safe processing for peace of mind

Best for spinning, felting, weaving prep, and dyeing

  • Hand spinning: Great for bouncy DK, worsted, and heavier yarns with crisp stitch definition. A solid choice for hats, mittens, sweaters that need structure, and sturdy everyday yarn.
  • Needle felting: Grippy fiber that builds form quickly—ideal for sculptural work, cores, and firm details.
  • Wet felting: Feltable for durable pieces like slippers, bags, and functional decor. Medium wools may take a bit more working than very fine wools, with a strong end result.
  • Dyeing & blending: A clean undyed base for custom colorways, heathered blends, and adding “tooth” to softer fibers.

FAQs

Is this good for beginners?

Yes. Cheviot has a grippy texture that many new spinners find easier to control than very slick fibers, especially when learning consistent drafting.

Is Cheviot soft?

Cheviot is a medium wool (26–33 microns). Many makers love it for socks, hats, mittens, and outerwear. If you’re sensitive to wool against the neck, you may prefer a finer micron fiber for scarves or base layers. It's described by many as having a crispy and slightly silky texture.

What yarn weights does Cheviot spin best?

It excels in bouncy DK, worsted, and heavier yarns with clear stitch definition. You can spin it finer with added twist, but it’s especially loved for durable everyday yarn.

Can I use this for needle felting and wet felting?

Yes. It’s feltable for both. Needle felting builds structure quickly, and wet felting creates a strong, long-lasting finish (medium wools may take a bit more working than very fine wools).

Can I dye it?

Yes. Undyed Cheviot is an excellent base for dyeing and blending. If you dye, many makers do a gentle scour first (if needed) to help color strike evenly.

Will it arrive as one continuous piece?

You’ll receive approximately 1 lb total. Depending on batching and packing, it may arrive as one continuous length or in multiple sections.

A dependable wool for makers who want bounce and durability

If your projects need structure, longevity, and a satisfying spring in the fiber, Cheviot is a smart staple. Add a pound to your stash for spinning, felting, dyeing, or blending—and enjoy how well it performs from start to finish.
